Distribution and habitat
The common house fly is distributed throughout the world and is always found in association with humans or the activities of humans.
The common house fly is a potential transmitter of diseases, making it an unpopular insect, particularly when it occurs in excessive population numbers.
A female lays up to 150 eggs in decaying matter; the overall development is very rapid (10 days in warm conditions!) so that up to 5 generations per year are possible.
Lifestyle and special aspects
The common house fly grows to approx. 6 – 9 mm in size; it smells excreted ferments with the feet and has a pronounced sense of smell. It also has so-called "adhesive pads" under the claws so that it can land upside down on the ceiling, for example.
The common house fly lives on waste products, giving preference in particular to sugary products. |
