Distribution and habitat
The centipede is to be found frequently throughout Central Europe on open ground, in woods and gardens.
Also called "stone dweller", the centipede can be found all year round under stones or died off pieces of bark.
Lifestyle and special aspects
The animal grows to 20 - 30 mm in length, making it the largest of its genus.
The nocturnal animals hunt insects and other arthropods.
As soon as an antenna has touched the prey, the powerful jaw feet (maxillipedes) curve round and hold the prey while a strong poison is injected.
This renders a fly for example immediately immobile.
Large tropical centipedes can even give a man a painful bite.
Centipedes can life for up to 7 years. |
