Distribution and habitat
Eurytopic, xerophilic. Occurs relatively frequently from April to September,
at dry, sunny edges of woods, heathland, meadows, sand pits and sandy coasts.

Lifestyle and special features
This beetle grows to 10 - 15 mm in size and is particularly active in strong sunshine.
It has very large eyes and strong mandibles with long teeth.
Larvae and adults live as predators, eating in particular other beetles, ants and spiders, with extraintestinal predigestion.
The larvae hunt for their prey from self-made earth tubes. |
