Distribution and habitat
Lasius niger is one of the most frequently species of ants and widely spread throughout Europe, Asia, Africa and North America.
It prefers sunny places and nests under flat stones or below paving slabs, but also amongst grass.
House holders often know these ants by their tendency to enter houses.
Lifestyle and special aspects
Workers of this species are 3-5 mm long.
The mating between queens and fertile males takes place on the wing mid to late summer.
They are tending and milking aphids for honeydew but also feed on vegetables and insects.
The queen can reach the age of 15-20 years (!) and workers can live up to 7 years. |
