Distribution and habitat
This species is common in Central Europe and occurs on the floor of forests but also on open ground. It is mainly found in winter, sometimes even when the ground is covered with snow.
Lifestyle and special aspects
The male money spider in this species grows to approx. 3 mm in size and has a most weird head process.
All 8 eyes are located on a stem extending into the air - 4 in the middle and 4 at the end of the stem. Little research has been done into why this should be so. There is sure to be some evolutionary advantage to seeing things from on high.
Walckenaeria acuminata probably lives off springtails, midges and small flies. |
